The House passes a bill to protect our industries from cyberattacks

The House lawmakers has finally approved a cybersecurity legislation on Monday. This bill will secure the technologies used to protect critical infrastructure from any type of cyberattacks. The bill will still need to get approved by the Senate before being signed into law by the President.

The Department of Homeland Security has been tasked with identifying cyber threats to industrial control systems and have been mitigating them. However, they have been operating within certain limitations.

DHS Industrial Control Systems Capabilities Enhancement Act of 2018

This bill amends the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to expand the responsibilities of the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center to ensure that the center’s activities address the security of both information and operational technology, including industrial control systems. Additionally, the center must maintain capabilities to identify and address threats and vulnerabilities to products and technologies intended for use in the automated control of critical infrastructure processes by: (1) leading efforts to mitigate cybersecurity threats to industrial control systems, (2) maintaining cross-sector incident response capabilities to respond to cybersecurity incidents, and (3) providing cybersecurity technical assistance to stakeholders.”

To amend the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to provide for the responsibility of the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center to maintain capabilities to identify threats to industrial control systems, and for other purposes.

So, basically this bill will require the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center to develop and maintain capabilities designed to mitigate threats and vulnerabilities. It will also requires Homeland Security to provide cyber technical support to end users and anyone capable of helping them to find and mitigate vulnerabilities in industrial control systems.
